De Tomaso P72 2019

Following an unsuccessful attempt to revive the company in 2006, the DeTomaso name returned to the fore once more in 2019. The rights to the brand were acquired in 2014 by Hong Kong based IdealVentures, who also added the defunct Gumpert factory to their portfolio. Considerable buzz was created from the start of 2019 with teaser hinting at a 'Project P' due to be launched imminently. Dubbed the P72, the mid-engined machine finally broke cover at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the summer of 2019.

The striking machine was styled by Wyn Design's Joe Wong and inspired by the P70 and other mid-engined racers built by DeTomaso back in the 1960s. Its curvaceous lines were further accentuated by a striking metallic red with gold accents finish. Underneath the carbon-fibre composite body are the same underpinnings as the Apollo Intensa Emozione introduced by same company a year earlier. Developed together with HWA and Autotechnica Motori, it combines an LMP1 specification carbon-fibre monocoque with a Ferrari-derived V12 engine. Modified to produce 780hp, this was mated to a Hewland six-speed, dual-clutch gearbox.

DeTomaso have expressed the intention to produce no more than 72 examples of the P72 with a design that would be virtually identical to the pre-production prototype demonstrated at Goodwood.
